Meander’s Design Language Comes to Life in Textiles – Finarte’s Unique Rug and Wall Tapestry

The unique details of Meander were brought to life through the collaboration of several talented designers, artisans, and artists. Among these are the handcrafted rug and wall tapestry, created by the Finnish textile company Finarte. Designed specifically for Meander, these textiles embody Finarte’s commitment to high-quality craftsmanship, skillfully reimagined for the present through color, shape, and material choices.

A First-Ever Custom Project for a Construction Company

The Meander project marked new territory for Finarte. “This was our first time creating custom pieces for a developer in collaboration with an architectural firm”, says Finarte’s CEO Larissa Immonen. “It was a fascinating project that offered us the opportunity to elevate our expertise to a new level”, she adds.

The collaboration spanned continents, involving Steven Holl Architects in New York, Finarte and a local architect in Finland, and Finarte’s manufacturing partner in India. “The multinational team worked seamlessly together, and the end result was exactly as envisioned”, Immonen notes. She emphasizes that the architectural firm’s attention to detail and understanding of the technical and aesthetic requirements of the rug played a crucial role in achieving the desired outcome.

Harmony of Design and Craftsmanship

The design process for the textiles began with a clear vision. “Good design is the foundation of everything. It’s important to start with a precise drawing, a well-thought-out color palette, and specific technical requirements”, Immonen explains.

The production process started with the essentials: finding the right weaving technique to ensure the best outcome. Sample swatches were created to confirm the final design, which were then sent to Steven Holl Architects in New York for approval. The initial samples were well-received, allowing production to proceed quickly. Both the rug and the wall tapestry were handcrafted in India, where Finarte has produced its products for nearly three decades.

Finarte’s Philosophy at Meander

Finarte’s project team was thrilled to collaborate with Newil&Bau on this project. “It was exciting to contribute to such a meaningful endeavor. We are delighted to have been part of this initiative, which emphasizes high-quality details and sustainable design. This was our first project of this kind, and it’s incredible that it happened in connection with such an iconic building”, Immonen summarizes.

The Meander textiles perfectly reflect Finarte’s philosophy of high-quality craftsmanship, authentic materials, and timeless design. “All our products are handcrafted and responsibly made. These principles are also evident in Meander’s rugs”, Immonen notes. The rug designs were tailored to match Meander’s architectural requirements and ambiance. They are not just decorative elements but integral parts of the overall design. The thoughtful collaboration of top professionals in various fields enhances the living experience for Meander’s residents. “We believe our products complement Meander’s design with the same thoughtful elegance that Steven Holl and Newil&Bau have envisioned”, Immonen concludes.
