Lasismi’s Handcrafted Wine Carafes – The Flowing Beauty of Meander in Glass

The unique wine carafes of Meander’s wine cellar pay tribute to Finnish craftsmanship and the tradition of glassblowing. The glassblowers of Lasismi, based in Riihimäki, created the carafes to reflect the architectural waves and design language of Meander.

A Carefully Designed Communal Space

One of Meander’s many carefully designed shared spaces is the wine cellar in the basement. The wine cabinets, sold as shares, allow residents to secure space for storing and aging their collections in ideal conditions.
The wine cellar’s unique, handcrafted wine carafes are a tribute to Finnish craftsmanship and the tradition of glassblowing. The glassblowers of Lasismi, based in Riihimäki, created these carafes to reflect Meander’s architectural waves and design language.

Continuation of Tradition in a Modern Setting

Lasismi’s story is part of Finland’s rich glass culture. Founded in 2010, this art glass cooperative operates in the historic Riihimäki glass factory, which has been the center of Finnish glassblowing for decades. The cooperative’s founders – young glassblowers and designers – strive to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern design, honoring history while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
The Meander project was a perfect example of Lasismi’s work. “Commissioned pieces are part of our daily work, and each project is unique. In this case, the challenge was to create free-form yet reproducible carafes that seamlessly fit into Meander’s overall aesthetic,” explains Kaappo Lähdesmäki, one of Lasismi’s founders.

Balancing Form and Function

The design of Meander’s wine carafes focused on blending architectural inspiration with functionality. “Designing the carafes required delicate balance: they needed to be striking yet practical and fit their intended space. Additionally, they had to maintain a flowing, dynamic shape without compromising usability,” Lähdesmäki explains.
Creating handcrafted functional objects always involves compromises, but these compromises can lead to beauty. “It was essential that the carafes fit their designated space while preserving their intriguing form and aesthetics,” Lähdesmäki continues.

Details That Complete the Space

Lasismi saw this project as a meaningful part of Meander’s identity.

“It is an honor to be part of such an ambitious project. Our contribution may be small, but it is part of a larger story. No one necessarily needs handmade glass products, but life should be about more than just necessities – we need beauty, details, and stories,” Lähdesmäki reflects.

The wine carafes are more than just functional objects; they are integral to Meander’s overall design. Their flowing shape adds a subtle rhythm to the space and connects to the building’s architectural language. “It is wonderful to see how our carafes fit into the overall aesthetic of Meander,” Lähdesmäki says with satisfaction.
